Some observations on Truth Hierarchies

چکیده

We provide a precise representation for, and a calculation of the length of, possible path independent determinateness hierarchies of Field’s construction in [4]. We further show in the hierarchies Fα of Fieldian truth sets, and Herzberger’s Hα revision sequence starting from any recursive hypothesis for F0 (or H0) that essentially each Hα (or Fα) carries within it the history of the whole prior revision process; we use this to prove a result on the non-decreasing nature of such sequences. We demonstrate the existence of generalised liar sentences, that can be considered as diagonalising past the determinateness hierarchies definable in Field’s recent models. The ‘defectiveness’ of such diagonal sentences necessarily cannot be classified by any of the determinateness predicates of the model. They are ‘ineffable liars.’

Assertional logics, truth-equational logics, and the hierarchies of abstract algebraic logic

We establish some relations between the class of truth-equational logics, the class of assertional logics, other classes in the Leibniz hierarchy, and the classes in the Frege hierarchy. We argue that the class of assertional logics belongs properly in the Leibniz hierarchy. We give two new characterizations of truth-equational logics in terms of their full generalized models, and use them to o...

Complexity and Hierarchy in Truth Predicates∗

Since seminal work of Tarski (e.g. Tarski, 1935), hierarchies have been much discussed in the literature on truth and paradox. Especially in recent years, this discussion has been decidedly negative. Tarski’s hierarchy of languages is sometimes described as the “orthodox” response to the Liar paradox (e.g. Kripke, 1975), but it is an orthodoxy many authors have gone to great lengths to avoid. F...

Comprehensive Cross-Hierarchy Cluster Agreement Evaluation

Hierarchical clustering represents a family of widely used clustering approaches that can organize objects into a hierarchy based on the similarity in objects’ feature values. One significant obstacle facing hierarchical clustering research today is the lack of general and robust evaluation methods. Existing works rely on a range of evaluation techniques including both internal (no ground-truth...

Populism, Exclusion, Post-truth. Some Conceptual Caveats; Comment on “The Rise of Post-truth Populism in Pluralist Liberal Democracies: Challenges for Health Policy”

In their editorial, Speed and Mannion identify two main challenges “the rise of post-truth populism” poses for health policy: the populist threat to inclusive healthcare policies, and the populist threat to well-designed health policies that draw on professional expertise and research evidence. This short comment suggests some conceptual clarifications that might help in thinking through more p...

This Is My (Post) Truth, Tell Me Yours; Comment on “The Rise of Post-truth Populism in Pluralist Liberal Democracies: Challenges for Health Policy”

This is a commentary on the article ‘The rise of post-truth populism in pluralist liberal democracies: challenges for health policy.’ It critically examines two of its key concepts: populism and ‘post truth.’ This commentary argues that there are different types of populism, with unclear links to impacts, and that in some ways, ‘post-truth’ has resonances with arguments advanced in the period a...
